Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Doo are two hound puppies with black and brown fur and thick wrinkles. They waddle and hop in their cages and look through the bars at people who could adopt them. They are in the Asheville/Buncombe County Humane Society Shelter. They are two of the lucky ones, because the staff determined that they are adoptable and will not be euthanized. But there are other animals in the shelter that are not lucky like Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Doo because they are in a full access shelter and will be euthanized. There is also another type of shelter called a limited access shelter. That’s when a shelter does not put down animals for any reason. There is a big debate about full access shelters and limited access shelters.

Explain how they avoid euthanizing. Use a quote fromNetwork. The ACN uses foster homes for animals. The foster owners take care of the woman who came to talkanimal until someone adopts it. The ACN sticks with you. What the benefits to haveanimal until it is adopted or dies. Val Kula, a volunteer with ACN, says that ACN doesn't use the term limited access shelters? What areaccess. They use the challenges? What do they needterm "safe for life" which means that an animal that comes to do if they can'tthem "will never, ever" go to a place where it will be euthanized. They have a pet store, Pet Harmony, where they sell food and dog accessories like leashes and collars and brushes and beds. They do adoption events there. "Another thing that Animal Compassion Network does is offer obedience training," says Val Kula. This helps dogs be more adoptable. " Sometimes , unfortunately, an animal right away?Although full access sheltersmight be really wild but we'll do whatever we have their problems soto, use trainers or classes, to keep that dog alive." ACN is very careful about who adopts an animal. You have to fill out an application, then someone comes to your house to make sure it's a good match for the pet. They also check with your vet if you already have animals or had animals to make sure you'll give the animal good care. Ms. Kula says we still do limitedneed full access shelters. Like where limitedshelters, too. Mr. Fulton says that if there weren't full access shelters are there may be more strayswe'd "have packs of wild dogs running around free How do you know this?around."
A solution to help stop the inhumane killing of animals in gas chambers in full access shelters is to pass a law that says gas chambers will be illegal in North Carolina and a law that says only an animal that is in serious pain , very old, very aggressive, or is too sick to be cured, can be put down. A way to get these laws to be passed is to talk to the Animal Compassion Network, a local shelter, or contact your legislators and see if they can help.

    Paragraph_2
“Full access shelters are great,” says Jim Fulton, volunteer coordinator at the Asheville/Buncombe Humane Society, but he does agree that some full access shelters do have their problems. Like sometimes they put animals down just because they do not have enough room for them. Lucky for the animals in Buncombe county, our shelters don’t do that. Also, it’s legal for some shelters in North Carolina to still use gas chambers. Gas chambers are rooms where they put animals that fill up with gas and suffocates the animal to death. Nazis used this to kill the Jews in World War II. It’s a slow and painful death.Asheville/ Buncombe shelters do not use gas chambers. They give the animal a shot that puts the animal into a deep sleep then stops the heart so the animal does not feel it. They only do this if the animal is injured or sick.
Describe a limited access shelter. Use the Animal Compassion Network as an example. Explain how they avoid euthanizing. Use a quote from the woman who came to talk with you. What the benefits to have limited access shelters? What are the challenges? What do they need to do if they can't place an animal right away?Although full access shelters have their problems so do limited access shelters. Remember Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Doo? They are the two hound puppies with black and brown fur and thick wrinkles at the shelter. They've probably already been adopted. But there will always be unlucky animals that must be euthanized because they are old or sick or injured. Our conclusion is that we need full access shelters and limited access shelters. But we would like to see more limited access shelters than full access, because we want to see more animals have a chance and that would be in a limited access shelter. If you want to help solve this problem try donating or volunteering to your local shelter. SavePreviewText Editor

The alligator in the cage can't turn around. It's getting bigger and bigger and its nose is pushing against the glass. The shark has no room to swim. It swims in tiny circles. It hits the glass, startled. There is a fading blue light, as you walk into this exotic pet shop. There are plenty of pets, screaming. As the staff welcomes you, you look around at the depressed animals. You're probably thinking that taking animals out of their natural habitats to be pets is bad. But the truth is, it's a really complicated topic.
Introduction-Paragraph_2Why do people take animals out of their natural habitat? “Because we must study them to make sure that in the future if they go close to extinction, we can breed them,” says Jim Paintaiff, an exotic pet specialist Also, he says, you might be saving an animal’s life, maybe they are losing food or habitat . Most people want these pets for their unusualness. But, exotic pets can be hard to handle and there are also many more bad things about them, too. According to the website of Born Free U.S.A., a non-profit group that works to pass laws against keeping exotic pets, exotic animals can carry diseases like Herpes B, monkeypox, and salmonella. Most animals from the other parts of the world are not used to the climate here. Also, you must have alot of time to care for them because they need lots of attention and care to survive here.
    Introduction-Paragraph_3
According to an article in the Asheville Citizen Times, (May 2, 2010) Monica Engebretson, from Born Free U.S.A. said,“North Carolina has relatively few regulations on exotic animals although counties can pass ordinances restricting them.” This means you need a lot of support to pass ordinances to restrict ownership of certain exotic pets. In 2004, a North Carolina boy was mauled by his aunt's Bengal tiger and killed. Wilkes and Surry counties then passed a law saying you can't have "non-domestic wildlife such as bears, wolves, tigers, other wild cats, non human primates, dangerous reptiles, and other non-traditional 'exotic' animals.'" Here in Asheville, according to -------from the Asheville Animal Control Services, an Asheville postman called Animal Control and said, "We have a box down here that's moving." ----- said, " When we carefully opened the box, sure enough, there was an American Alligator." Having an American Alligator is extremely illegal. According to-----, people in Asheville can have some exotic animals like pot belly pigs, if they have a permit. To check on what animals you can have and if you need a permit you can call Animal Control.
Another way that Animal Control Services of Asheville can help is if an exotic animal is reported and it doesn't have a permit. First, they would catch the animal, then they would send it to a shelter. The shelter would send it to a zoo or nature center. People can sponsor the animal by giving money to buy it food at the Nature Center. People can also volunteer with the Western North Carolina nature center or a rescue group, like Carolina Tiger Rescue, which rescues wild cats. Another obstacle to solving the problem of exotic pets is that people just want to own exotic pets. We need to raise awareness about the problems using methods like this feature story.
The issue of exotic pets is complicated, you must know alot to take care of an exotic pet. One of our group members owns an exotic pet, but she knows so much about it that she can keep it alive. But, its simple, all you have to do is help and the alligater will be able to turn around. The shark will be free. All the exotic pets from around the world will be free to live a life of peace and happiness.

The puppy had fluffy ears and wrinkles of dark fur over his eyes. He was a little bigger then a loaf of bread, but heavier. He liked to nibble, climb on people and lick their faces, and to play. But on this day, he was thrown out of a car window on the cold, bare street and watched the car drive away, confusion in his eyes. He’d been abandoned without food, water, or shelter. x--Animal_abandonment_happens_around_theAnimal abandonment happens around the world. But that doesn’t mean its right.
People may abandon their animals because they can’t take care of them. Or it may be that they don’t want them or want to take responsibility for them. Sixty percent of the animals at the Asheville Humane Society animal shelter are strays. Jim Fulton, from the Asheville Humane Society says " Animal abandonment is cruel!"
Here some ways you can help end animal abandonment. Imagine a dog on the street, it has no collar and there is nobody around. You should report animals like this to the animal shelter or the Asheville Animal Control.. Another thing you can do is help people who have a hard time taking responsibility of their pets.A solution to starving animals is to try to get pet owners the right healthy food for animals. The owners may abandon them if they can't get the food for their pets. Zach Wilson, age 9, started a food pantry for pets in Florida. It was such a great help to the animals. You can also spay and neuter your animals so it can't reproduce. You can go to Asheville Humane Alliance Spay & Neuter Clinic in 231 Haywood Street Asheville, NC 28801 or call them at (828) 252-2079. According to Jim Fulton, you can volunteer at the Asheville Humane Society. If you volunteer you would make the lives of the pets even better! If you see a darn cute pet you want to keep forever, at the Humane Society you can adopt an animal. Don’t adopt from a pet store or a breeder. If you know you can't take care of a pet take it to the animal shelter instead of abandoning it.
Abandonment is a major problem everywhere. .Abandonment is more of a problem than we thought--and even though there are many ways to help, there will probably always be abandoned animals. There will always be poor people who can't afford to keep their pets. There's a law in the city of Asheville that says that you have to spay and neuter your pets but there are only four animal control agents to enforce that so people don't do it and they end up abandoning puppies, like the one we described in the first paragraph. This puppy should have been loved and cared for by its original owners. This puppy could have been back at its owner’s house playing with its bone and then having dinner.

Animal abandonment is a big problem.
Animal abandonment happens around the world. But that doesn’t mean its right. People may abandon their animals because they can’t take care of them. Or it may be that they don’t want them or to take responsibility for them. Sixty percent of the animals at the Asheville Humane Society animal shelter are strays. Cockle doodle doo! A rooster on a farm, right? That’s not the kind of rooster we're talking about. Imagine, roosters fighting with roosters and sharp beaks. Imagine dead roosters in the trash can. That’s what a cock fight is--a secretive activity that everyone needs to know about. If everyone was aware that cockfighting exists, everyone could help bring the people who fight cocks to justice.
Cock fighting is a horrible crime. In every match, a rooster gets hurt or, most of the time, killed in the process. It is illegal everywhere in the United States, and a lot of the time people who are involved with cock fighting will get arrested if found. People come to cock fighting matches for simple reasons: gambling to make money, to watch animals die and for entertainment. Cock fighting can spread diseases. It happens like this… a cock gets hurt and gets blood in its lungs; the owner of the cock picks it up and sucks the blood out. They get the blood out of the cock’s lungs so it can breathe and fight longer. According to the ASPCA website, people tend to get diseases from doing this, like bird flu.
Before each fight, the owners of the cocks put blades on the cock’s leg to help the cock kill the other cock. They are really sharp and they look like the blade part on a scythe. They probably buy them from a line of secret people who make the blades and sell them. Most of the time in a fight both cocks die but only one dies in the arena and the other dies soon after it leaves. They throw the dead cocks into garbage cans.
We watched a movie about cock fighting on a website called ASPCA, it was scary seeing all the hurt and killed cocks. We discovered that if the police get there before or after the cock fight it will be too late. According to Jim Fulton, " It is not a pleasant death to the losing cock."
Jim Fulton was a nice man who we interviewed at the Asheville Humane Society. According to him, “Cock fighting is an inhumane sport." He helps with roosters that come in from different places, and other animals. Another organization that can help is the Asheville Animal Control. According to Animal Control officer _, there's not much cock fighting activity right in Asheville, but they have visited a place where cockfighting took place outside the city. She says it's hard to prosecute because they have to catch people in the act. Some signs that cockfighting is taking place are small dog houses on the side of a hill that have colorful roosters in front of them. Animal Control and the Humane Society don't get many cocks in to the shelter, probably because it is so secret and maybe because the cocks are dead.
If everyone was aware that cockfighting exists, even here in Buncombe County, everyone could help bring the people who fight cocks to justice by reporting what they see. According to Encyclopedia.com, cockfighting has been popular for hundreds of years and is still popular all around the world even in the United States. It is a very cruel sport and inhumane. It's also dangerous for the humans, who can get bird flu or be violent over the gambling. You can help by calling the Animal Control or the police at 911 if you hear anything about this horrible sport. People need to hear about this because it is cruel. Our group is outraged about cockfighting
